Ephesus is one of the most magnificent, best-preserved classical Greco-Roman metropolis ruins on Earth. Located near Selçuk in İzmir province, walking along the white marble avenues of Ephesus offers an astonishing window into the daily life, politics, and religious devotion of antiquity. Once a thriving Mediterranean port city of 250,000 residents, Ephesus played a pivotal role in the rise of classical philosophy, Roman civic engineering, and early Christian history.

1. Architectural Marvels of Ephesus

The undisputed icon of Ephesus is the 2nd-century Library of Celsus. Built to store 12,000 scrolls and serve as a monument to Senator Celsus, its towering two-story marble façade features intricate stone carvings and allegorical statues representing Wisdom, Virtue, Knowledge, and Intelligence. Stroll down Curetes Street past public latrines, Emperor Hadrian's Temple, and the opulent Terrace Houses (where Roman elites lived surrounded by colorful mosaic floors and wall frescoes). At the end of the Marble Way stands the Great Theatre, capable of seating 25,000 spectators and famous as the location of Saint Paul's sermons.

2. Sacred Pilgrimage: House of Virgin Mary & St. John's Basilica

Nestled on the serene green slopes of Mount Bülbül, just minutes from Ephesus, lies the House of the Virgin Mary (Meryem Ana Evi). Discovered in the 19th century following visions of Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich, this peaceful stone chapel is believed to be Mary's final sanctuary. In nearby Selçuk, visit the Basilica of Saint John, constructed by Byzantine Emperor Justinian over the tomb of the Apostle John. Nearby stood the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

3. Şirince Village Charm, Fruit Wines & Boutique Stays

After exploring ancient ruins, head into the nearby hills to Şirince, a picturesque 19th-century village famous for its white-washed Ottoman-Greek houses, narrow cobblestone streets, and fruit-infused wines (peach, pomegranate, melon). Enjoy fresh organic Aegean mezes in vine-covered courtyards and stay in historic boutique mansion hotels such as Nişanyan Hotel or Güllü Konakları for a peaceful rural escape.
